my home “office”–where the magic happens

If you’re wondering why office is in quotations… then check out this post. Last year, we turned an old beat up camper into my home office. And it has worked out perfectly. It is my little get-a-way sometimes. I really love that it’s not actually inside the home where I am constantly reminded of the piles of laundry and the projects that need to be done around here. Having an outside office forces me to walk out the door and into my “work environment” so that I can focus solely on work.

homeofficetour

So here is where we started… you can see all the before pictures in the original post. It was disgusting. But it was free, so with a couple hundred bucks and a lot of elbow grease, it is now an awesome little room!

shedonwheels

Now, for the after pictures of the inside…

When you first walk in, this is what you see

officedesk

Up until about a month ago, it looked like this… and then my amazing hubby surprised me with a new flat screen and wireless accessories to replace the 3 monitors I had and all those messy wires and speakers. (He rocks, huh?)

deskbeforeafter

to the right of the door, is my make shift bookshelf. It and the desk are both part of Elizabeth’s Pottery Barn bedroom set, and the bookshelf is technically suppose to hang on the wall (the side against the wall has a beveled edge), but I’m all about making due.

officebookshelf

Since this space also doubles as our guest bedroom, I wanted to add a mirror and some welcoming accessories. The mirror came from a local thrift store. It was gold, but after a little spray paint I love it so much more. The picture frame came from Charming Charlies and the flowers were clipped off my bush (these were actually taken last summer).

mirror before after

to the left of the door, and if you’re sitting at my desk, this is the view:

aphoto 4

This is a futon that pulls out into a full size bed. It is actually pretty comfy. We added a humungous memory foam mattress pad, and no bed is complete without a nice down comforter. There is room under the bed for storage or small suitcases as well. And I left 2 of the baskets on my bookshelf empty for guests.

yaybanner

I know my colors don’t all mesh very well together. The blue baskets on the shelf are too blue instead of a turquoise for the quilt and “YAY” banner (from one of my favorite etsy shops), but for now, they work. Truth be told, they won’t have to work for much longer, and I’m dying to tell you why, but I can’t just yet…

To give you perspective of how small this space is, here’s Bean visiting… you can see where the doorway, the shelf, and part of my desk chair is in this photo

visitorphoto

Can you believe it once looked like this though? Skeevy… (yes, that’s the same corner, looking in from the door).

homeofficebeforeafter

Having a dedicated home office is one of the most important parts of working from home. Before hand, I was working from the kitchen table, or couch, and let’s be honest… it is not very effective. There are too many distractions in our homes and to be successful we need to FOCUS! Or at least I do.

So what do you think? Do you have a creative home office you can share with us? Feel free to leave a link below or post a picture on our facebook page to see and be inspired!

monday

One of my favorite things about working from home and running this blog is that I’m able to set my own hours and work when I can! The past 2 weeks haven’t allowed for a whole lot of “work”.

But they have allowed for a whole lot of play, and that is perfectly okay sometimes!

Sometimes you just need to step away in order to refocus! And I would never regret spending a little more time with the reasons I work in the first place!

Little Miss had hand foot and mouth disease all last week. Her blisters are finally almost gone! I am writing an entire post about how we’ve been treating it.

monday2

We’ve also been transitioning from summer to fall. It’s bittersweet. I love summer and fall, but time is just flying way too fast. We cleaned the deck real good one last time before fall and began switching over Elizabeth’s clothes this weekend!

We had a house full or family and friends over pretty much all weekend!

Last week, Andrew & I snuck out on a little date.

monday1

We also had a party for my brother’s 21st. There are always lots of fireworks. I bet there were 7,000 bottle rockets this year! That all of his friends like to destem and set off all at once. Just like CJ would’ve done. It is always a sad day made so much better by a house full of his closest friends! He never knew how lucky he was to have those friends! Not many people can say their friends would show up even after they die…

monday3

The rest of the week we’ve been snuggling close, playing as hard as El feels like, making muffins and yummy snacks, and just soaking up time as much as we can!

The rest of the week I’ll be busy working and preparing for our big webinar Thursday night! Have you registered yet?

But enough about me? What have you been up to?

Viva las vegas!

Holy Moly! I cannot believe this trip was almost a month ago already!  It has taken a while for me to actually process everything. Let me start by saying: It was AWESOME!

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas though… Enjoy this little clip of our amazing team and then read on!

  • if you would like more information about joining Project Dream and living a Shaklee life, email me!
  • I LOVE helping other women!

It started out with a little invitation from Shaklee to join them for the Global Conference in Las Vegas, NV! I was both ecstatic and afraid! But you can read all about that here.

confinvited

Wednesday started great! I had already packed and got extra snuggles from Elizabeth before heading to the airport!

I wasn’t sure what to expect! I had never met any of my team members before since we are all over the United States, but honestly, it was like reuniting with an old friend! It was like I already knew every single one of them (and their husbands) because our team is so close!

projectdream

As soon as I arrived at the MGM, (minutes after arriving at the airport) I was swept off to the red carpet to register! Talk about wining and dining! They had massages set up for us, lots of drinks and snacks. The MGM staff that registered me commented, “everyone here is just so happy!” So true!

confcinchbars

After registration, the Star Achievers from our team had an exclusive event with our CEO, Roger Barnett. It is always incredible to be in his presence! He is one of the nicest, most humble men I have ever met, and I am so honored that he is the future for Shaklee! One of the incredible things about him, is that of all 6,000 people there, he actually remembers you. In the past year, I have met him and talked to him three times now, and he remembers.

confus

In fact, later that weekend, in his closing speech, our team was pictured with him from that Star Achievers event! It was pretty exciting to be recognized and be sort of “the face” of Shaklee!

confceo

Speaking of being recognized, on Thursday we had our official opening events and speakers and then I was recognized on stage for my 1st year’s success! It was definitely the pinnacle moment of my year and what will push me harder this next year! This picture isn’t vey clear, but here I am my “my hard work paid off” look with my prized Tiffany box!

confbox

During Thursday’s events, we got to watch a live interview with some of the Olympians from London! Shaklee actually sponsors nearly 20 olympians! Several of whom won gold medals this year! It is incredible to be a part of something so big!

confolympics

Afterwards, our team went out on the strip to find dinner! I cannot say enough how absolutely amazing our team is! We truly are like one big family! Without all of the drama!

confdinner2

Friday was full of sessions and lots of learning! We got to hear from others who have been in Shaklee for 30 and 40 years. Such incredible people. This is for life, people. This isn’t just something that I’m doing for extra fun money. Shaklee is providing my family with generational income! And an opportunity that I can one day pass on to Elizabeth.

conference1
conf2

Friday night, we were invited to a Future Leader’s Event that was so much fun! Our team had our own private poolside cabana and drinks for being 1 of the top 15 leaders! Have I mentioned how awesome our team is?

shakleeteam

We all have different stories. Different “whys”. Different goals. Different dreams. But we all have 1 thing in common: our desire for a healthier, wealthier life for our entire family! And a passion for helping other women have the same!

One of my favorite things about the conference was being able to see all of our products on display. My home is totally “shaklee-ized” as my family truly uses all of them, but there’s just something about seeing them all on display instead of on the website.

confclean

Healthy home and some of our amazing Get Clean products!

confnutrition

Healthy nutrition, our amazing supplements!

confskincare

Healthy Beauty – our nutrition therapy for your skin (and hair)!

confvivix

RX for Life including our #1 selling product: Vivix! This stuff is revolutionary!

confsports

And last but not least, our Sports Nutrition products!

Saturday, we had more sessions and our closing speakers! I just love this picture of Roger closing! Did you know that Shaklee is the NUMBER ONE Natural Nutrition Company? Not top 10, not number 3, we are number 1. And I am so pleased to say that I “work” for them!

conf#1

confa

Saturday night we went back out on the strip (with charged cameras and phones) for 1 last family dinner!

confstrip

and Sunday, we got up super early and traveled back home! I met Andrew and Elizabeth at a birthday party! While it is amazing to be a traveling, working mom now: the best part is always coming home! After all, they are the reasons I do what I do!

using facebook effectively to grow your business or blog

*disclaimer* I realize this is not my typical blog post, but it is something you may be seeing more of. While I blog to truly empower other women to find natural, simple solutions for balancing their home and entire lives, the simple gratification of doing it does not keep food on our table. In short, this blog is part of my brand and business and I hope that if you are also a mompreneur you will find this post and the others to come helpful!

usingfacebook

First of all, it is an honor to be guest posting for Jess today! As you will learn as you read on, it is almost unbelievable, for I still think of myself as a total “newbie” when it comes to blogging and social media, but I grew so quickly that others are now calling me a social media “expert”! Carazy!

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Jaima and I blog at Ring Around the Rosies. I am also a business leader and marketer for Shaklee, the #1 Natural Nutrition Company in the United States! I started with Shaklee not only because I truly believe in their practices and love their products, but also as a way to monetize my blog and take some of the burden off of my husband as I have always wanted to be a stay at home mom. Thanks to social media and online marketing, I have been able to achieve that dream and support our family while I stay at home with our two year old princess!

So what is social media and why is it important? If you’re reading blogs, you are probably already familiar with what social media is. In short, social media is a rapidly developing way of communicating and interacting with others online using different platforms such as blogging, facebook, twitter, linked-in, etc.

Social media is key in advertising and growing your business and/or blog. In order to succeed, you have to be where your clients are, and they are on social media. Most likely they no longer use a phone book, and chances are few actually read newspapers or the flyers that come in the mail. They are on facebook…. please read the entire article at Allora Handmade today!

Creating Balance

Today I want to share with you a few of my favorite tips on simplifying life in your home! Something I will begin sharing more about!  And, if you’d like more tips, or just some great daily conversation then  join my facebook community!

I have found that when I get up just 15 minutes before I know my daughter will wake up the day goes much smoother. Maybe it’s because I have a few moments to gather myself instead of being woken up by crying. Maybe it’s because I go ahead and dress myself and get her a cup a milk for I know their will be limited chances to do it throughout the day. And I know she’ll be demanding it as soon as I go get her. Regardless, those few minutes set the tone for my day.

I also find it much easier to prepare her meals when she’s not demanding them. It is hard to think and get a good meal together when there’s a toddler whining as she begs for you to pick her up. Whether I do it ahead of time like these smoothies, or while she’s playing quietly or napping, it saves me the whiny headache.

freezablesmoothies

Something else I like to do before she wakes up, or while she’s quietly eating breakfast is throw a load of laundry in the wash, or fold a load I washed the night before. If I can do 1 small load a day, it is much more likely that I won’t let it get out of control (like I’m known to do). I’d rather wash, dry, fold and put away a small load than save it all for 1 day a week and have a mountain (or two).

laundry

Once a month, I have all of the essentials delivered to my house. I never have to run out of laundry soap or vitamins, and it’s a few less things I have to put on my Target list (that I often forget) and carry in the house. With Shaklee, I save 25% off my purchases on autoship! Double Win if you ask me.

shaklee

Either once a month, or once a week I try to menu plan! It saves me so much money and the thought of “let’s just go out”. I try to keep some things in the pantry at all times, but others, I buy twice a month depending on what’s on my list! Here’s a sample of the sheet I created to put in a page protector on my fridge! (subscribe to my newsletter for this and other free printables).

menu

I no longer sweat the toys strewn all over the house during the day anymore. Now, we pick them up together before naptime and before bedtime. Any that we miss, I can throw in this basket outside of her door until she wakes up. I seriously LOVE this table and basket.

basket

One of the biggest (if not THE biggest) thing I try to do to keep our 980 sq foot home balanced and flowing well is staying organized! Every thing has to have a place, and we have to be able to easily locate it and see what we have. I am also constantly purging things that doesn’t serve a purpose or have a special meaning. It is sooo freeing to let go of stuff. Try it!

batteries

Do you ever get tired of saying the same thing over and over? I did. I often have a house full of 20 year old boys (my brother’s friends whom I’m thankful still come around). They’ve never had to clean up after themselves before and leave messes for me… What did I do?

microwave

I made a permanent reminder for them on the inside of the microwave door! Now I don’t have to clean up their midnight messes!

Another mess boys make? The toilet. Yes. I have no idea how they do it. My solution:

toilet
I hung a toilet brush with a 3M hook on the side of the toilet. This is also good for guests who may make an embarrassing mess. And, I also did it in our master bathroom too. It’s so easy for me to walk by and clean it really quick! I very rarely use anything to clean the bowl itself (because it just doesn’t get THAT dirty). Weekly, I wipe the handles and under the cover with Shaklee’s Basic G!
And there you have a few of my favorite tips to save your sanity and establish control and create balance in your home. What are your favorite solutions? Please leave them in the comments below!

shed on wheels {my office}

If you follow me on facebook then you recently saw a little sneak peek of my office. And since someone recently asked for a home tour, I thought I would start here, since this is where most of the magic now takes place.

I’ve shared with you before that our house is tiny. Not even 1,000 sq ft. And while, it’s not our dream home, it has been a great temporary home while we wait to sell our house in Connecticut and can afford to start building our dream home. Yes, it drives me crazy 95% of the time. It is old, the ceilings are VERY low (and uneven) and I kid you not, everything is backwards. hot water = cold water, door locks sideways instead of up, some light switches are on the outside of the doorways… Yep. It nearly kills this OCD gal! But we have filled it with love and laughter, and are still making the most of it until we open the next chapter in our life.

So here is my home office:

IMG_3691

Shocked? We got it for FREE off Craigslist. We literally don’t even have room for a closet office in our house (we only have 3 closets and no pantry as it is). And no place for guests to stay either.

Solution: what is now named Shed on Wheels. AKA my office.

Truth be told? I LOVE it. I love not being in the house where I am constantly worried about the pile of laundry and the floor that constantly needs vacuuming. When I walk out to my office, it’s work time. I can focus on work and not on the dishes.

IMG_3692

Okay, so I didn’t love it like it was, I mean the door didn’t even close anymore

IMG_3693

So my amazingly talented husband reconstructed it for me.

IMG_3694

Yuck! We ripped everything out.

IMG_3695

And this is what it looks like today. Well, a few months ago.

IMG_8532

What a transformation, right?

IMG_9024

That little corner by the door is where my bookshelf now sits. (Don’t worry, an additional post is coming up with the furnishings).

IMG_9023

There is a futon on this wall, it serves as a couch mostly, but my brother’s friend pulls it out and sleeps out here almost every weekend.

IMG_9025

I love these windows. I still haven’t found the right window treatments, but I have a few ideas. What would you do?

IMG_9026

White beadboard just makes me giddy!

IMG_8534

We did trim that branch back too that you see hanging down.

IMG_8535

MAJOR difference, right?!?

IMG_8536

So how did we do it? Well we (mostly Andrew, but I helped quite a bit) ripped everything out down to the base/trailer. We ensured the floor was sturdy and level and then framed the walls like you would for anything. Insulated really well, sided the outside and put bead board inside.

The half round windows came from the Habitat store. We had the double hung already, and I think we picked the a/c up off craigslist. The roofing and laminate floor was left over from our house. We only spent about $250-$300 on the whole thing.

The outside has been painted with an oops paint from Home Depot, but we are hoping to paint our house and this too before fall.

Stay tuned for the final reveal!

I’d love to hear what you think! Do you have a unique office space? Leave me a comment below and let me know.

5 steps to taking control {your super power}

I get asked all the time, “How do you do it all”?

How do you keep a clean house, run a business, blog, and have dinner on the table every night? What’s your secret? Do you really have a Nanny?

Well, I’ve touched on all of this a little bit before, but to answer your questions again: NO, I do not have a Nanny, and although I do stay really busy, I do not “do it all”. At least not my definition of all.

But I do have a few secrets when it comes to taking control of your home and life. We’ve all heard people joke about having secret powers and what we would all love to have. Well, what if I told you that you do have a secret power inside you?

initiative

That’s right: initiative. YOU have the choice and power to create the life you long for. It starts with you and one simple choice to make a change!

This is how I get through my days. No secrets, no Nanny that I’m hiding in the closet.

1) You must take care of yourself. In order to be the best mom/wife you can be, you must be healthy. I know it’s sooo easy to put yourself on the back burner. Trust me, after Elizabeth was born I stayed on the back burner. In fact, I probably wasn’t even on the back one.

But for the past year, my days start with a glass of filtered water and my vitamins! They truly keep my immune system strong and give me the energy I need to accomplish my day to day things while chasing around a busy toddler!

dailywater

2) Get up early. Even just 10 minutes before the baby wakes up. This sets the tone for my days. And I admit, I am the worst morning person ever. I hate getting out of bed in the morning, but the rewards are so worth it. I’d rather have those 10 minutes to myself than to wake up at the sound of Elizabeth crying. If I can just get dressed and get her a cup of milk before she wakes up the day goes so much smoother than me being fussy because she woke me up and now she’s demanding and I need to get dressed and her diaper needs to be changed, and the dog needs to go out… you get the picture. Ideally, I love to have enough time to get in a quick 30 minute workout, read a few scriptures, feed the dog, and get her a cup of milk and make my protein shake. But just 10 minutes makes a difference.

3) Tame your list. Do you feel overwhelmed by your to-do list? Let it go! This was sooo hard for me. I am ocd. I write lists for every thing, but they were making me nuts. So, I made a schedule of everything I would like to accomplish in a day, assigned times to them and I try to stick to it. Mine hangs on my fridge as a reminder. Anything else that gets done is just “extra”. Every day on my list is laundry, sweep, and dishes. If I can get these 3 things done, my home stays manageable. I try to toss in a load of clothes before bed and then I fold them while Bean eats breakfast. They don’t always get put away until bedtime, but at least I don’t have 4 mountains of dirty clothes scattered about my bedroom anymore.

schedule

4) Schedule work hours. If you have a home business, this is key to your success. If you want to be seriously successful like a real business, you need to act like a real business and set office/workshop hours. Up until about 2 months ago I felt like I worked all day and accomplished nothing. I was constantly checking emails, calling clients, facebooking, etc… My laptop or phone was always on the couch or the kitchen counter where I could “work from home”. But finally I decided I needed to change. The reason I work from home is so I can be at home with Elizabeth. To teach her and play with her. Not so I can sit on my laptop all day waiting for something to happen. So, I decided I would actually go to my office during naptime. And for the most part, that is the only time I make calls, reply to emails, and work. And you know what? Within 1 month, I made Director with Shaklee. I had a conscience vision and work hours and I know what I have to get done in those short hours, there are no distractions and I am much more productive! No more feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

5) Learn to say no. You cannot always pick up the phone when it rings. And you most certainly cannot always cook dinner for your husband’s family every weekend. We are not The Beavers, this is 2012 and we are busy. Take care of YOUR own family before trying to take care of everyone else’s. That sounds sooo selfish, and while it is rewarding to help others out, you can’t say yes every single time. Especially if you’re subject to being taken advantage of. This, I learned the hard way too, but you just can’t always be the one doing for others if you have a family who needs you. And you can’t reply to every single email or every comment. You will kill yourself trying. Let it go. Be present for your family. Peace of mind has a price.

I will be sharing more in-depth about these and others soon.

If you’d like more tips, be sure to join our facebook community and let us know how YOU do it all for your family.

Finding Your Vision (being awake to life)

I am so honored to have one of my mentors guest posting for you all today. You gals don’t know what a privilege this is. I have been working with Sarah for almost 8 months now, and she is so incredible! She is one of the reasons this year has already been so great for me. She has challenged me to be the mom and wife and business owner that I have always wanted to be, but wasn’t. Now that I have a clear vision, Sarah’s guidance, and the Lord’s grace – I am successfully becoming the woman I want to be!
Take it from here, Sarah.
***

If I asked you why you do what you do, could you answer me?

If you are like many women, you had a vision for your life when you were younger and you worked hard to get there. You studied hard, found a great job. Maybe you always knew you wanted to be a Mom and you went for it. Like many of us, you have seen those goals come into being in one way or another.

So do you know WHY you are a mom, a working mom, an entrepreneur, an employee? What is it about DOING these things that brings you joy? Do they bring you joy?

Maybe you haven’t thought about this before. Part of being awake to life is being completely aware of what you want and living in a way that helps you accomplish this.

So let’s do a little exercise together:
I am a mom because:
I work because:
I work at this job because:
I stay at home and care for my children because:

Now, I am not looking for, “I work at Starbucks because it pays the bills.” and if that is your answer and you continue to find yourself with answers like that I want to challenge you to think BIGGER for yourself. Living a life working just to pay the bills is suffocating.

You are meant for so much more.

I’ll answer one for you. I am an entrepreneur because: I want to help other women reach their ultimate potential in this life. I want to lift them up and create so much positive energy that we begin to change the world. I want to show my boys that anyone can do what they want and make it if they make a choice to. I chose to do this while staying home with my boys because I want to show them how to follow their dreams so they go on to shine brightly.

If you find yourself stuck which happens to everyone from time to time, it sure happened to me!

I want to invite you to my seminar. Please come, you owe it to yourself.

I don’t think I have anything that needs to be added. Please visit Sarah’s site for lots of great inspiring posts, and follow her on facebook for daily insights and motivation.
