$75 Bathroom makeover

Several of you have asked for a home tour. I am working on it for you! Honestly, I never thought I would have showed you this room, but in the midst of 2 pretty stressful weeks, I coped by giving this room a little tlc! With only $75, this bathroom is finally complete! It was the only room in the house that we hadn’t really touched.

You can see how I transformed the mirror, sconces, and other accessories here.

makeover

First, a few befores! I thought I took more, but can’t find them now.

bphoto 2

bphoto 1

Honestly, this is how the room looked most of the time. The boarder was falling, the mirror and lights were rusty, clothes were everywhere. I stored the towels in a basket on the floor (no linen closet).

It totally stressed me out. This is the first room I walk into when I wake up, and immediately, I would wake up stressed to a big hot mess!

Finally, I’d had enough!

2photo 3

2photo 4

I cleaned out everything from under the sink and the medicine cabinet. Honestly, how many different body sprays and creams and things do we need? I threw out anything expired, anything I hadn’t used in a while, anything I now know is toxic, and was left with very little – which is what I actually use! Why do we waste so much space and energy with crap we don’t even use?

2photo 1

Then I stripped the paper and gave everything a fresh coat of paint! The walls, the trim, and all of the accessories. The old towel basket is now being used for dirty clothes (just keeping it real in the pics for you!)

photo 4

My wonderful hubby hung shelves above the toilet for us!!! What an amazing and incredible easy transformation! I’m hoping to replace all of our towels this Christmas with fluffy white ones. We’ve had all the others since our wedding shower in 2006. It’s time!

1photo 1

I bought the wire baskets in the $1.00 section of Target back in the Spring!

1photo 2

photo 1

I also painted the inside of the medicine cabinet! The inside of the door, I painted with chalk paint, and just gave the inside a fresh coat of white!

I use small glasses a lot for corralling stuff. In this one, I have my tweezers, nail clippers, nail file, and little tubes of creams!

2photo 5

After it was done, I decided to further decompress and soak in the tub after I was finished!

I love the new space so much! And I really love that it only took 2 nights to complete and $75!

beforeandafter

So much cleaner and brighter. No more stress as soon as I wake up.

Do you deal with stress by cleaning and throwing stuff out like I do?

and I’m the one that painted you

In case you weren’t aware, I have a major spray paint addiction! I also live in a house that hasn’t been updated since the early 90s, except for the major renovations (floors, walls, lights, etc) we did really fast in order to move in while I was very pregnant.

We are so blessed to have this temporary home. While we are renting it from my aunt and uncle, we have done quite a bit to it! But there are still a lot of little minor things that could use updating!

This week I’m working on the master bathroom! I’ll do the whole reveal on how we’re doing it for $75 or less, but today I just want to pop in with a couple of things that simply painting can improve!

Maybe if we had an unlimited supply of money, I would completely replace everything… but probably not. My motto is kind of “make do with what you have”! Definitely not the same motto I’ve always had, but part of the changes we’ve made this year is in the way we think!

bath1

We did replace the globes when we first moved in because 1 was broken. They both had mauve and gold flowers on them. Yesterday, I took the whole sconces (and medicine cabinet between the two we have) off the wall and sprayed them with rustoleums metallic charcoal. No more rusty fake brass!

bath2

The air vent had seen better days too! One quick coat of the same spray paint made all the difference!

bath3

The only thing we did to this bathroom before we moved in was rip up the carpet (yes, carpet in the bathroom) and replace the sub floor. It was really wavy. Because we had no money, or time, we put down cheap stick on tiles. After 2 years, they have separated for whatever reason (maybe because we still don’t have baseboards to help hold them in place?). Today I decided to paint the spaces with plain white paint. The same paint I used to repaint the trim and door. I took a foam brush, smudged it in all of the cracks, and then took a damp wash cloth and wiped it off the tiles! Still not perfect, but big difference, huh?

I’m excited to show you the whole makeover soon! For now, my break is over and I need to hang the new shelves!

Hope you’re having a great day!

How To Store Your Dish Towels

Today’s post is brought to you from one of my favorite bloggers, turned best friends! I’m sure you already know Sarah, but if you don’t she’s fabulous! I found her at Three Boys where she shares incredible furniture restorations and other great household tips! She recently founded her own Sarah Finks domain where she shares her passion for transforming women’s lives! And as my life coach, she has definitely transformed mine! You can find her in one spot on facebook to keep up with all she has going on!

dishtowels

I am a huge advocate of using cloth dish towels as much as possible. Paper towels are wasteful, expensive, and terrible for our environment. Paper is however VERY convenient. We do have a roll of paper towels in our kitchen but we go through about 1 roll every 2 months, maybe less. How does this happen with 3 small boys? CLOTH DISH TOWELS!!! I store them in the cabinet right next to the sink in a basket. This way I always have one on hand. I use about 3 a day when all is said and done. Then in the evening after I have cleaned up the kitchen I just throw them into the laundry.

20 Clean Dish Towels: Can you spot them?

Do you need a closer look? Did you find them?

Tada! Clean Dish Towels!

The other thing I LOVE about this system is I don’t have to spend much time folding or arranging the towels so that they look nice. PERFECT for a busy household! All of my requirements are met. Its organized, easy on the environment, and easy on me!

If you use a lot of paper towels try the recycled brands! Seventh Generation is great and available at most grocery stores and Amazon.

how to clean your rims like a girl

Alternatively titled: how to please your husband!

Today I’m going to show you how to clean your tire rims like a pro girl {with cherry pits}!

nails

We recently had the brakes and tires replaced on our truck. Apparently, clean up isn’t part of their process (and gauging by their price per hour, I’m okay with that)

tire

Since I am the one who drives the truck, I did not want to be seen with cruddy tires! After all, they say you can judge a person by the shape their car is in (do you believe that? As a mom with carrots and raisins strewn across the back seat, I hope not). So, I got to work!

So out I went with a bowl of water, a sponge, and one of my favorite products: Scour Off! With a little elbow (and brake) grease, in about 3 minutes I had a brand new looking rim! No fake, wet tire shine here, just water and scour off!

after

And then I moved to the back and around to the other side…

tire2

I think those are finger prints?!? Either way, in less than 15 minutes I had clean shiny rims and a happy husband!

afterclose

And here’s a side by side!

both tires

Amazing right?!?

If you’re interested in trying Scour Off yourself, or replacing your cleaners for non-toxic all natural ones, I highly recommend starting with one of Shaklee’s starter kits! It will last you a really LONG time!

beginning and ending your day

First of all, thank you for ALL of your sweet comments, emails, and facebook posts regarding yesterday’s posts… It’s good to know we’re not alone in this rollercoaster of life!

TodayI want to share with you my habits that peacefully signify the beginning and close of a day in our home. I will be doing a “day in the life” post soon, too!

beginningandending

My day usually begins with the usual: bathroom, deodorant, brush teeth, throwing on yoga pants if I’m not going anywhere (and sometimes even if I am), checking the baby monitor and checking the updates on my phone. But to me, the thing that STARTS my day is opening the curtains in our den. We have french doors with blackout curtains (it’s a wonky system, yes) and I have to open them so that I can let the dog out. Opening the curtains and filling the room with the morning light is what signifies the start of the day to me.

Similarly, I get this sense of done each night after I cut the kitchen light off. Dinner time is generally the most stressful and busiest part of the day (which is why I love freezer cooking). Andrew comes home from work, I’m trying to get dinner on the table, we go through the mail, Elizabeth is squealing, Jade is barking, I want to hear about Andrew’s day. We finally eat. We spend some time playing together with Elizabeth (outside usually during the summer). Andrew does the dishes while I give Elizabeth a bath. We both put her to bed and pray over her crib. Then Andrew usually catches up on school work or regular work while I put away the dishes and clean the rest of the kitchen. It’s busy. But cutting the light off closes it all down for me. To me, it’s a sign that “this day is over” and “the kitchen is finally closed”!

I know of others who have turned a coffee mug over on their desk every afternoon before they go home to signify the end of the day. It’s like turning that “open sign” off.

After I welcome the day with the opening of the curtains and close it by turning off the light, I like to do something in the quiet to feed my soul. In the morning, I like to get in some time for God. Whether it is praying for something specific or reading scriptures (currently I am loving the She Reads Truth daily plans from some of my favorite bloggers). At night, it is shower time. Andrew and I have showered together since we moved in together, but he always gets out a few minutes before I do. Those last few minutes of the day are when I can really gather my thoughts, reflect on the day, and plan out my tomorrow.

I challenge you to come up with a plan to start and finish your day peacefully. Or maybe you already do, in which case I hope you leave a comment below letting us know what it is!

cleaning the potty

Several of you have asked which Shaklee products I use to clean my toilet! Yes, I only use 3 products to clean my entire house and 1 I even bathe my daughter in from time to time, so which one do I use for the toilet?!?

I have shown you how I clean the shower, how I clean the counter, and now: how I clean the potty! Enjoy!

(sorry for the repetitiveness in the beginning, I was trying to listen to Elizabeth and talk at the same time)

You can find the products mentioned in our Get Clean Kit! It is the kit I started with, and has EVERYTHING you need to clean your house (including laundry and dishes)!  The Basic G is here. Seriously, 1 bottle of Basic H and Basic G will last over a year, and the laundry and dish soaps last my family 3-4 months! Not only are they the healthiest choice, but they are also saving us so much money!

vinegar vs basic h

*this is a post from October 2011 that did not transfer when I switched to wordpress, so I thought I would republish it for you!

vinegar

I just received a nice comment from a reader on my Get Clean post, and I wanted to reply, but thought it may be something you might all be interested in. She said, “Hun, all you really need is vinegar and water with some tea tree oil and that will clean anything and everything. And you can make your own natural laundry detergent and dishwashing detergent all for very cheap.” Before Switching to Shaklee, I too was using a lot of vinegar, baking soda, tea tree oil, and lavender oil. I was never happy with the end results, and essentially hated the smell! And it kept corroding my shower drain, and rusted the screws on my toilet seat.

But, it was “natural” and cheaper than conventional cleaners which is why I used it.You can even see these things in the front left of my “cleaners before” pictures.

old cleaners

When I switched to Shaklee’s Basic H I also started saving money. Tea Tree Oil is at least $6 for a couple of ounces and Vinegar is at least $3 a bottle. 16oz of Basic H is $10.35 and is the equivalent to over 3,400 bottles of Windex! I’ve been using it for 3 months now and haven’t gone through 1/8 of a bottle. So for less than 25 CENTS, I’m able to make an entire bottle of all purpose cleaner, an entire bottle of window cleaner, AND an entire bottle of degreaser! Now, I keep my vinegar in my pantry solely for cooking! And I keep my tea tree oil in the medicine cabinet for its antiseptic qualities and for treating spiders and other critters. And as far as the laundry detergent and dish soap, I would spend a ton on organic soaps to have enough to make my own detergents. And who has time for that?

Yes, vinegar is almost natural (provided it is in its natural form), as it does not pollute the environment. But, is Vinegar safe? Perhaps it might be safe for us, but we have to remember one thing about Vinegar: It is an acid. That it is not necessarily good for all plant life. Also, Baking Soda mixed with Vinegar will produce a gas (which can be harmless to a certain degree.) Almost every living thing has a certain acid-base balance (pH level). If you take something that is of a higher pH level, it most likely will break up proteins and more. And it makes its way back to the earth as an acid in the end.

Another thing to consider is that when you put vinegar on your skin, you’re introducing a change in your skin’s acid chemistry. Our skin and blood is not the same pH balance as vinegar. Should Vinegar get into your bloodstream, it can do some wonders for purifying, but it can also work against your digestive tract. People experience things like heartburn or other uncomfortable things with a different acid mix. In the long run, Vinegar may end up becoming a carcinogen if mixed with the wrong chemical elements.

One of the beautiful thing about Bacic H is that it is pH balanced for the human body and unlike Vinegar, is Organic, has living vegetable enzymes to do the hard work and is Non-Toxic. I know women who bathe their kids in Basic H (why not, it’s organic and you don’t have to clean your tub?), but I would NEVER fathom bathing my daughter in Vinegar. Gag. Also, unlike Vinegar, Basic H biodegrades quickly and will not harm a water’s ecosystem. In fact, it helps it by becoming plant food. AND, it has no smell! And, it cleans way better with less effort than Vinegar and/or baking soda ever did for me.

And what about the packaging? How long do you think it takes that plastic jug to break down? Basic H’s bottle is completely recycled and biodegradable, and is shipped in a recycled boxes. Through the sale of Shaklee’s Basic H, in the last year alone, Shaklee has eliminated 2.7 billion bottles of conventional, ready-to-use 26-ounce window cleaner — if placed end-to-end, these bottles would wrap around the earth more than 18 times! For every Get Clean Kit Shaklee sells, Shaklee plants five trees as part of our Million Trees Million Dreams Campaign. And the consumer eliminates 108 pounds of waste from landfills and 248 pounds of greenhouse gases – in just one kit!

Make the switch for your family today!

I hope that helps you all!

Creating Balance

Today I want to share with you a few of my favorite tips on simplifying life in your home! Something I will begin sharing more about!  And, if you’d like more tips, or just some great daily conversation then  join my facebook community!

I have found that when I get up just 15 minutes before I know my daughter will wake up the day goes much smoother. Maybe it’s because I have a few moments to gather myself instead of being woken up by crying. Maybe it’s because I go ahead and dress myself and get her a cup a milk for I know their will be limited chances to do it throughout the day. And I know she’ll be demanding it as soon as I go get her. Regardless, those few minutes set the tone for my day.

I also find it much easier to prepare her meals when she’s not demanding them. It is hard to think and get a good meal together when there’s a toddler whining as she begs for you to pick her up. Whether I do it ahead of time like these smoothies, or while she’s playing quietly or napping, it saves me the whiny headache.

freezablesmoothies

Something else I like to do before she wakes up, or while she’s quietly eating breakfast is throw a load of laundry in the wash, or fold a load I washed the night before. If I can do 1 small load a day, it is much more likely that I won’t let it get out of control (like I’m known to do). I’d rather wash, dry, fold and put away a small load than save it all for 1 day a week and have a mountain (or two).

laundry

Once a month, I have all of the essentials delivered to my house. I never have to run out of laundry soap or vitamins, and it’s a few less things I have to put on my Target list (that I often forget) and carry in the house. With Shaklee, I save 25% off my purchases on autoship! Double Win if you ask me.

shaklee

Either once a month, or once a week I try to menu plan! It saves me so much money and the thought of “let’s just go out”. I try to keep some things in the pantry at all times, but others, I buy twice a month depending on what’s on my list! Here’s a sample of the sheet I created to put in a page protector on my fridge! (subscribe to my newsletter for this and other free printables).

menu

I no longer sweat the toys strewn all over the house during the day anymore. Now, we pick them up together before naptime and before bedtime. Any that we miss, I can throw in this basket outside of her door until she wakes up. I seriously LOVE this table and basket.

basket

One of the biggest (if not THE biggest) thing I try to do to keep our 980 sq foot home balanced and flowing well is staying organized! Every thing has to have a place, and we have to be able to easily locate it and see what we have. I am also constantly purging things that doesn’t serve a purpose or have a special meaning. It is sooo freeing to let go of stuff. Try it!

batteries

Do you ever get tired of saying the same thing over and over? I did. I often have a house full of 20 year old boys (my brother’s friends whom I’m thankful still come around). They’ve never had to clean up after themselves before and leave messes for me… What did I do?

microwave

I made a permanent reminder for them on the inside of the microwave door! Now I don’t have to clean up their midnight messes!

Another mess boys make? The toilet. Yes. I have no idea how they do it. My solution:

toilet
I hung a toilet brush with a 3M hook on the side of the toilet. This is also good for guests who may make an embarrassing mess. And, I also did it in our master bathroom too. It’s so easy for me to walk by and clean it really quick! I very rarely use anything to clean the bowl itself (because it just doesn’t get THAT dirty). Weekly, I wipe the handles and under the cover with Shaklee’s Basic G!
And there you have a few of my favorite tips to save your sanity and establish control and create balance in your home. What are your favorite solutions? Please leave them in the comments below!

shed on wheels {my office}

If you follow me on facebook then you recently saw a little sneak peek of my office. And since someone recently asked for a home tour, I thought I would start here, since this is where most of the magic now takes place.

I’ve shared with you before that our house is tiny. Not even 1,000 sq ft. And while, it’s not our dream home, it has been a great temporary home while we wait to sell our house in Connecticut and can afford to start building our dream home. Yes, it drives me crazy 95% of the time. It is old, the ceilings are VERY low (and uneven) and I kid you not, everything is backwards. hot water = cold water, door locks sideways instead of up, some light switches are on the outside of the doorways… Yep. It nearly kills this OCD gal! But we have filled it with love and laughter, and are still making the most of it until we open the next chapter in our life.

So here is my home office:

IMG_3691

Shocked? We got it for FREE off Craigslist. We literally don’t even have room for a closet office in our house (we only have 3 closets and no pantry as it is). And no place for guests to stay either.

Solution: what is now named Shed on Wheels. AKA my office.

Truth be told? I LOVE it. I love not being in the house where I am constantly worried about the pile of laundry and the floor that constantly needs vacuuming. When I walk out to my office, it’s work time. I can focus on work and not on the dishes.

IMG_3692

Okay, so I didn’t love it like it was, I mean the door didn’t even close anymore

IMG_3693

So my amazingly talented husband reconstructed it for me.

IMG_3694

Yuck! We ripped everything out.

IMG_3695

And this is what it looks like today. Well, a few months ago.

IMG_8532

What a transformation, right?

IMG_9024

That little corner by the door is where my bookshelf now sits. (Don’t worry, an additional post is coming up with the furnishings).

IMG_9023

There is a futon on this wall, it serves as a couch mostly, but my brother’s friend pulls it out and sleeps out here almost every weekend.

IMG_9025

I love these windows. I still haven’t found the right window treatments, but I have a few ideas. What would you do?

IMG_9026

White beadboard just makes me giddy!

IMG_8534

We did trim that branch back too that you see hanging down.

IMG_8535

MAJOR difference, right?!?

IMG_8536

So how did we do it? Well we (mostly Andrew, but I helped quite a bit) ripped everything out down to the base/trailer. We ensured the floor was sturdy and level and then framed the walls like you would for anything. Insulated really well, sided the outside and put bead board inside.

The half round windows came from the Habitat store. We had the double hung already, and I think we picked the a/c up off craigslist. The roofing and laminate floor was left over from our house. We only spent about $250-$300 on the whole thing.

The outside has been painted with an oops paint from Home Depot, but we are hoping to paint our house and this too before fall.

Stay tuned for the final reveal!

I’d love to hear what you think! Do you have a unique office space? Leave me a comment below and let me know.

5 steps to taking control {your super power}

I get asked all the time, “How do you do it all”?

How do you keep a clean house, run a business, blog, and have dinner on the table every night? What’s your secret? Do you really have a Nanny?

Well, I’ve touched on all of this a little bit before, but to answer your questions again: NO, I do not have a Nanny, and although I do stay really busy, I do not “do it all”. At least not my definition of all.

But I do have a few secrets when it comes to taking control of your home and life. We’ve all heard people joke about having secret powers and what we would all love to have. Well, what if I told you that you do have a secret power inside you?

initiative

That’s right: initiative. YOU have the choice and power to create the life you long for. It starts with you and one simple choice to make a change!

This is how I get through my days. No secrets, no Nanny that I’m hiding in the closet.

1) You must take care of yourself. In order to be the best mom/wife you can be, you must be healthy. I know it’s sooo easy to put yourself on the back burner. Trust me, after Elizabeth was born I stayed on the back burner. In fact, I probably wasn’t even on the back one.

But for the past year, my days start with a glass of filtered water and my vitamins! They truly keep my immune system strong and give me the energy I need to accomplish my day to day things while chasing around a busy toddler!

dailywater

2) Get up early. Even just 10 minutes before the baby wakes up. This sets the tone for my days. And I admit, I am the worst morning person ever. I hate getting out of bed in the morning, but the rewards are so worth it. I’d rather have those 10 minutes to myself than to wake up at the sound of Elizabeth crying. If I can just get dressed and get her a cup of milk before she wakes up the day goes so much smoother than me being fussy because she woke me up and now she’s demanding and I need to get dressed and her diaper needs to be changed, and the dog needs to go out… you get the picture. Ideally, I love to have enough time to get in a quick 30 minute workout, read a few scriptures, feed the dog, and get her a cup of milk and make my protein shake. But just 10 minutes makes a difference.

3) Tame your list. Do you feel overwhelmed by your to-do list? Let it go! This was sooo hard for me. I am ocd. I write lists for every thing, but they were making me nuts. So, I made a schedule of everything I would like to accomplish in a day, assigned times to them and I try to stick to it. Mine hangs on my fridge as a reminder. Anything else that gets done is just “extra”. Every day on my list is laundry, sweep, and dishes. If I can get these 3 things done, my home stays manageable. I try to toss in a load of clothes before bed and then I fold them while Bean eats breakfast. They don’t always get put away until bedtime, but at least I don’t have 4 mountains of dirty clothes scattered about my bedroom anymore.

schedule

4) Schedule work hours. If you have a home business, this is key to your success. If you want to be seriously successful like a real business, you need to act like a real business and set office/workshop hours. Up until about 2 months ago I felt like I worked all day and accomplished nothing. I was constantly checking emails, calling clients, facebooking, etc… My laptop or phone was always on the couch or the kitchen counter where I could “work from home”. But finally I decided I needed to change. The reason I work from home is so I can be at home with Elizabeth. To teach her and play with her. Not so I can sit on my laptop all day waiting for something to happen. So, I decided I would actually go to my office during naptime. And for the most part, that is the only time I make calls, reply to emails, and work. And you know what? Within 1 month, I made Director with Shaklee. I had a conscience vision and work hours and I know what I have to get done in those short hours, there are no distractions and I am much more productive! No more feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

5) Learn to say no. You cannot always pick up the phone when it rings. And you most certainly cannot always cook dinner for your husband’s family every weekend. We are not The Beavers, this is 2012 and we are busy. Take care of YOUR own family before trying to take care of everyone else’s. That sounds sooo selfish, and while it is rewarding to help others out, you can’t say yes every single time. Especially if you’re subject to being taken advantage of. This, I learned the hard way too, but you just can’t always be the one doing for others if you have a family who needs you. And you can’t reply to every single email or every comment. You will kill yourself trying. Let it go. Be present for your family. Peace of mind has a price.

I will be sharing more in-depth about these and others soon.

If you’d like more tips, be sure to join our facebook community and let us know how YOU do it all for your family.
