diy table tray

This weekend was spectacular. Saturday was gorgeous, 70 degree weather. Elizabeth and I loaded up with my aunt, cousin (who I often refer to as my sister – because well, she practically always has been), and my niece. We hit several local yard sales and had lunch. I got Elizabeth a lot of summer clothes and picked up a few things for the house. Yesterday was not quite as nice weather wise (seriously, what is up with this crazy weather). It was super cold and rainy, but we all went back out for lunch and a trip to Goodwill. I am on a hunt for some new things for our house.

And while I was there, this idea was born.

tabletraymakeover1

I found a 2.99 frame and .99 pillow case, that were each discounted. I found lots of other things too that I’ll share with you eventually (as well as where this nifty little tray will stay), but I just couldn’t wait to get this project done and shared.

diytray

I simply popped the glass out, painted the frame with craft paint I had on hand (only because I am out of spray paint). Once it was good and dry I went over it again to make sure there weren’t any paint strokes (they drive me nuts). While it was all drying, I cut the pillow case out and wrapped it around the cardboard insert of the frame. Then reassembled everything.

traymakeover

I really love it. I cannot wait to show you where it will go and how it will eventually be styled.

Here’s just a couple of things I pulled together to give you an idea of the size and colors.

For about $3.00 I have a new, custom tray! I love it! This one will go on our ottoman, and I am working on a similar one, to go on our bathroom counter to corral all of our stuff.

_____

in other news, I am SUPER excited and a little overwhelmed for this week. Early Thursday morning I will be flying to Dallas for BlissDom! Excited to be a Community Leader and meet up with some of my favorite people! I have a lot of prep to do before then, eek!

I have been selling tons of things from our house that I just don’t need/want. I thought I had already purged everything I didn’t love last year, but I am still finding stuff… Getting it out of the house is so freeing to me, and getting paid for it is makes it even better!

$75 Bathroom makeover

Several of you have asked for a home tour. I am working on it for you! Honestly, I never thought I would have showed you this room, but in the midst of 2 pretty stressful weeks, I coped by giving this room a little tlc! With only $75, this bathroom is finally complete! It was the only room in the house that we hadn’t really touched.

You can see how I transformed the mirror, sconces, and other accessories here.

makeover

First, a few befores! I thought I took more, but can’t find them now.

bphoto 2

bphoto 1

Honestly, this is how the room looked most of the time. The boarder was falling, the mirror and lights were rusty, clothes were everywhere. I stored the towels in a basket on the floor (no linen closet).

It totally stressed me out. This is the first room I walk into when I wake up, and immediately, I would wake up stressed to a big hot mess!

Finally, I’d had enough!

2photo 3

2photo 4

I cleaned out everything from under the sink and the medicine cabinet. Honestly, how many different body sprays and creams and things do we need? I threw out anything expired, anything I hadn’t used in a while, anything I now know is toxic, and was left with very little – which is what I actually use! Why do we waste so much space and energy with crap we don’t even use?

2photo 1

Then I stripped the paper and gave everything a fresh coat of paint! The walls, the trim, and all of the accessories. The old towel basket is now being used for dirty clothes (just keeping it real in the pics for you!)

photo 4

My wonderful hubby hung shelves above the toilet for us!!! What an amazing and incredible easy transformation! I’m hoping to replace all of our towels this Christmas with fluffy white ones. We’ve had all the others since our wedding shower in 2006. It’s time!

1photo 1

I bought the wire baskets in the $1.00 section of Target back in the Spring!

1photo 2

photo 1

I also painted the inside of the medicine cabinet! The inside of the door, I painted with chalk paint, and just gave the inside a fresh coat of white!

I use small glasses a lot for corralling stuff. In this one, I have my tweezers, nail clippers, nail file, and little tubes of creams!

2photo 5

After it was done, I decided to further decompress and soak in the tub after I was finished!

I love the new space so much! And I really love that it only took 2 nights to complete and $75!

beforeandafter

So much cleaner and brighter. No more stress as soon as I wake up.

Do you deal with stress by cleaning and throwing stuff out like I do?

and I’m the one that painted you

In case you weren’t aware, I have a major spray paint addiction! I also live in a house that hasn’t been updated since the early 90s, except for the major renovations (floors, walls, lights, etc) we did really fast in order to move in while I was very pregnant.

We are so blessed to have this temporary home. While we are renting it from my aunt and uncle, we have done quite a bit to it! But there are still a lot of little minor things that could use updating!

This week I’m working on the master bathroom! I’ll do the whole reveal on how we’re doing it for $75 or less, but today I just want to pop in with a couple of things that simply painting can improve!

Maybe if we had an unlimited supply of money, I would completely replace everything… but probably not. My motto is kind of “make do with what you have”! Definitely not the same motto I’ve always had, but part of the changes we’ve made this year is in the way we think!

bath1

We did replace the globes when we first moved in because 1 was broken. They both had mauve and gold flowers on them. Yesterday, I took the whole sconces (and medicine cabinet between the two we have) off the wall and sprayed them with rustoleums metallic charcoal. No more rusty fake brass!

bath2

The air vent had seen better days too! One quick coat of the same spray paint made all the difference!

bath3

The only thing we did to this bathroom before we moved in was rip up the carpet (yes, carpet in the bathroom) and replace the sub floor. It was really wavy. Because we had no money, or time, we put down cheap stick on tiles. After 2 years, they have separated for whatever reason (maybe because we still don’t have baseboards to help hold them in place?). Today I decided to paint the spaces with plain white paint. The same paint I used to repaint the trim and door. I took a foam brush, smudged it in all of the cracks, and then took a damp wash cloth and wiped it off the tiles! Still not perfect, but big difference, huh?

I’m excited to show you the whole makeover soon! For now, my break is over and I need to hang the new shelves!

Hope you’re having a great day!

diy anniversary gift

this didn’t transfer in my blog when I switched over… so here you go again! Happy Friday, y’all!

First of all, thank you so much for all of your sweet comments and feedback about the new blog design!!! Your words mean so much to me!
Sorry I’ve been a little MIA this weekend. Mini has been sick and I messed my back up on an organizing binge Thursday.

Alas, I’m here today to show you my anniversary present to Andrew. As I’ve mentioned before, money is very tight, so I was looking at something I could make for free that would still be meaningful!

anniversary

This is what I came up with!

I love it, and so did Andrew! We couldn’t decide where to put it, but he decided to take it to his office (after I got a few quick pictures)!

I simply found some of our favorite places on google maps and printed them out on cardstock.

I tried to make sure they were all at the same zoom distance (ocd)

Then I cut them out in hearts.

I already had the black frame with the great white mat.

I cut out scrapbook paper and then glued the hearts on, but not flat, to give it a 3D effect.

I left the glass out!

Waalaa! What do you think?!?

back to school teacher gift

I am on my way to Vegas, but wanted to share this post from December with you in time for back to school!

I originally saw this at Domestically Speaking. My nephew & I made it for his teachers on the first day of school!

IMG_8577

All you need is an old mason jar (or any recycled glass jar), a bag of peanut MnMs (or regular, plus a few for yourself), scrapbook paper, rafia ( ribbon or anything to tie it with will work).

IMG_8575

I just typed the little saying up in Word and printed it it on cardstock. You can change it up anyway you like.

IMG_8574

Cut it out, punch a whole, a tie it on! I also cut a little circle of paper to go under the lid!

What do you think? Do you give your teachers gifts?!? I’d love for you to link up your ideas in the comments section!

DIY Gift {Instagram Coaster}

I wanted to share with you a super simple, but oh so special gift that I love to make. I made a few of these for Christmas presents, and then made Andrew one for his office for father’s day!

To start, I use instagram to add a filter to my pictures and make them square. If I want to make a collage of pictures or add text I use picmonkey to edit.

Then, I have something like this:

daddygram

In Microsoft Word, I create a 4×4 text box and fill it with my picture. You can get four 4×4 text boxes on 1 page like this:

4picsonscreen

I print it out on cardstock and gather the rest of my supplies:

materials

I spread 1 coat of Mod Podge on the back of my picture, and place it on my 4.25” tile. Then, smooth out any bubbles and apply a top coat over the picture. Again, make sure there’s not any bubbles.

coatofmodgepodge

When it’s dry it should look like this:

completecoaster

and be waterproof to sit your glass on

all4

Once everything is good dry, I add a piece of felt with hot glue to the back.

felt

And then I usually get so excited, I don’t wait ‘til Christmas or the holiday to give it to the recipient. I am TERRIBLE at surprises!

What is your favorite thing to do with Mod Podge? Leave me a comment or join me on facebook to share your ideas!

shed on wheels {my office}

If you follow me on facebook then you recently saw a little sneak peek of my office. And since someone recently asked for a home tour, I thought I would start here, since this is where most of the magic now takes place.

I’ve shared with you before that our house is tiny. Not even 1,000 sq ft. And while, it’s not our dream home, it has been a great temporary home while we wait to sell our house in Connecticut and can afford to start building our dream home. Yes, it drives me crazy 95% of the time. It is old, the ceilings are VERY low (and uneven) and I kid you not, everything is backwards. hot water = cold water, door locks sideways instead of up, some light switches are on the outside of the doorways… Yep. It nearly kills this OCD gal! But we have filled it with love and laughter, and are still making the most of it until we open the next chapter in our life.

So here is my home office:

IMG_3691

Shocked? We got it for FREE off Craigslist. We literally don’t even have room for a closet office in our house (we only have 3 closets and no pantry as it is). And no place for guests to stay either.

Solution: what is now named Shed on Wheels. AKA my office.

Truth be told? I LOVE it. I love not being in the house where I am constantly worried about the pile of laundry and the floor that constantly needs vacuuming. When I walk out to my office, it’s work time. I can focus on work and not on the dishes.

IMG_3692

Okay, so I didn’t love it like it was, I mean the door didn’t even close anymore

IMG_3693

So my amazingly talented husband reconstructed it for me.

IMG_3694

Yuck! We ripped everything out.

IMG_3695

And this is what it looks like today. Well, a few months ago.

IMG_8532

What a transformation, right?

IMG_9024

That little corner by the door is where my bookshelf now sits. (Don’t worry, an additional post is coming up with the furnishings).

IMG_9023

There is a futon on this wall, it serves as a couch mostly, but my brother’s friend pulls it out and sleeps out here almost every weekend.

IMG_9025

I love these windows. I still haven’t found the right window treatments, but I have a few ideas. What would you do?

IMG_9026

White beadboard just makes me giddy!

IMG_8534

We did trim that branch back too that you see hanging down.

IMG_8535

MAJOR difference, right?!?

IMG_8536

So how did we do it? Well we (mostly Andrew, but I helped quite a bit) ripped everything out down to the base/trailer. We ensured the floor was sturdy and level and then framed the walls like you would for anything. Insulated really well, sided the outside and put bead board inside.

The half round windows came from the Habitat store. We had the double hung already, and I think we picked the a/c up off craigslist. The roofing and laminate floor was left over from our house. We only spent about $250-$300 on the whole thing.

The outside has been painted with an oops paint from Home Depot, but we are hoping to paint our house and this too before fall.

Stay tuned for the final reveal!

I’d love to hear what you think! Do you have a unique office space? Leave me a comment below and let me know.

Summer Shelves

Why do the weekends go by so fast? Andrew had Army this weekend, and I ran my first 5k! It feels pretty awesome to finally be able to say that! I started running again (for the first time since before I got pregnant) in February but only made it 3 weeks before I hurt my back. So last week I started back, and then ran my first 5k! I wasn’t able to run the entire thing yet, but I finished and I wasn’t last (or 2nd last) so I am happy! I took yesterday off and ran another 2 miles tonight! Progress for sure!

I finished my Summer Shelves, too! I’ll probably continue to tweak them, but for now this is what they look like.

summershelves

Sorry these are always so fuzzy, it is REALLY hard to get a good clear picture because of the lighting and angle.

I kept the heart display of our favorite places up. Added a piece from one of my favorite set of dishes and the little bird (that I’m thinking about painting – it came from $1 store).

plate

I made the Shine art, and added a little tiny creamer cup of my Mom’s that I LOVE (I love hob-nail and I love turquois and I love it double because it was hers).

sign

Then I added split peas to the yellow flower pieces and kept the house rules and votive holder. They give off the perfect twinkle at night and I added a small votive to the creamer cup too.

summershelvesside

I cannot tell you how much I love these shelves! They are in my open dining room/kitchen which is the first room you enter in my house. They are such a focal point. And I love that I was able to purge most of my seasonal decorations for the other rooms and just use what will fit here as my center piece!

And because I love you all so much, you can snag your own free Let it Shine printable here!!!

You can see the tutorial on how to make them here.

Check out the ones in my family room here.

Fall here. Valentines here.

Do you have a seasonal focal point in your home?

DIY Sensory Tables

I have shared with y’all on facebook a little bit here and there about these awesome tables, and I am finally posting about them for you!

sensorytables

Y’all, before I dive into “how to” I just want to say that this was hands down, the best $30 I’ve ever spent! Ever! Elizabeth (and her friends) play with this all the time! It keeps her busy and occupied, and I love it!

If you are brave, you could even bring the bean table inside during rainy days or for the winter. And if you’re really brave, you could throw a drop cloth down and do the same with the water table.

IMG_6755
what you need:

  • 1x6s or good pallet wood (and of course a saw to cut them, or have the hardware store cut them for you)

  • screws & drill or nailgun

  • 2 large plastic storage bins with lids

  • primer & paint

  • filler for bean table

  • toys

IMG_6731 IMG_6732

how to:

  • cut your 1x6s to size. You will need 4 each for legs, 4 each for the box, and 2 each for braces. Mine are cut at an angle, so that the bins fit in securely while still allowing the tops to go on. For the legs I wanted mine to be right at her arm level, so mine are 24” tall. (plus she will grow), so your height will depend on the height of your child. I assembled the box first assuring the bins fit. Then, I screwed in the legs. I then ran 2 braces across the bottom (you can see in the pic of the water table above).

  • After everything was assembled, I primed the wood and then spray painted with an indoor/outdoor paint that was safe for wood.

  • Then you fill with your filler, add toys, and PLAY!

IMG_6734

notes:

I found that large lima beans are the best filler (just be sure to cover them up each night so they don’t get wet and soft). I tried split peas and rice, but they were too hard to pick up and put back in the bucket. Plus, one of El’s friends tried to put a split pea in her nose. Large Lima beans are almost too big for little noses, and they are much easier to pick up. You COULD use sand if you’re cool with that. I just do not like cleaning up sand, and did not like the thought of it being mixed with water. It is inevitable that it will be mixed… or dumped on the ground. or gotten all over faces… oi!

I bought large, but shallow bins with lids so that they can be stored easily. I close them up every night in case of rain and dew. I don’t want soggy beans or leafs in them. I hate the thought of wasting however many gallons of water it takes to fill the tubs, so assuming it’s not really dirty (so far it hasn’t been) I don’t empty the water except once a week (if that).

IMG_6738

The whole thing cost me about $30.00. We used good pallets for the wood. I already had the primer. All I had to buy were the bins ($7 each), 3 bags of beans ($1 each), 2 cans of spray paint (4 each), and a bag of sand toys ($5). I got the bins, beans, and toys from the Dollar Store. But compared to sensory tables you purchase ($80 is the CHEAPEST I’ve seen) without toys, you cannot beat it! And you get to pick the colors!

Here’s another update we did: We added outdoor carpet to our back deck. This deck, is 20 years old and needs some major repairs! But since we’re renting and don’t really want replace the whole deck, we just carpeted it for now! What a difference! No more splintery deck with nails to catch your toes on! I can vacuum it or spray it off so easily now!

IMG_6003

Do you have a sensory table? If not, I hope you’ll try to make one!

DON’T MISS!
